V./1.6.: Persistent fetal arteries (persistent caroticobasilar anastomoses)
Persistent trigeminal artery (primitive trigeminal artery) represents the most frequently reported persistent anastomosis, which directly interconnects the internal carotid artery and the basilar artery. From its origin in the intracavernous segment of ICA, it may penetrate the dura of the posterior fossa or directly the dorsum sellae to join the superior cerebellar artery or to the basilar artery in segment between the aforementioned artery and the anterior inferior cerebellar artery. The incidence is 0,1 – 0,2 %. Persistent otic artery between the intrapetrous segment of ICA and the labyrinthine artery and hypoglossal artery between the extracranial segment of ICA and the basilar artery are also reviewed. They are located in the internal acoustic meatus and in the hypoglossal canal, the first represents itself more frequently.
