IV./2.5.: Vascular malformations

The most frequent reason for subarachnoid haemorrhage due to a malformation is the arteriovenous malformation (AVM).

image
Macropgraph 6A-B: A large group of malformations is the angiomatous, non neoplastic malformations of the intracranial vessels, out of which the so called AVM (arteriovenous malformation) can cause SAH. A: Here, AVM can be observed from above, as the chaotic pile of sinous vessels with abnormal calibers. The irregular, pulsant vessel growth cannot be mistaken for anything, macroscopically. The intraoperative oppinion of the neurosurgeon is a necessary information for the pathologist.
B: On the cut surface of the AVM, its sharp borders, and deponated haemosiderin, due to the per diapedesim haemorrhages across the variant intravascular spaces with abnormal walls, can be observed.
