I./3.3.: Magnetic resonance imaging – MRI

MR imaging demonstrates the regenerative nodules of the liver (principally in hepatitis induced cirrhosis) properly. It is slightly hyperintense on T1-weighted, and usually hypointense on T2-weighted images. Microcirculational status of the liver parenchyma can be quantified using perfusion MRI, which shows the severity of cirrhosis. This method can be used in the detection of e.g. antiangiogenetic therapeutic response in liver metastasis, or even in the investigation of viability following ablational interventions.

MRI-elastography is a very interesting and efficient examination which –similary to US elastography – demonstrates the compressibility/tenseness of the liver tissue. It is a highly sensitive method in early cirrhosis (fibrosis). This method is currently not available in Hungary yet.
