V./1.5.: Territorial organization of the circulation of the brain
In case of the brain the terms circumference and perforating vessels are used. The circumference vessels are larger vessels coursing around the certain regions. Contrarily the perforating vessels are terminal arteries. In addition in the case of the brainstem the term (para)median vessels are also used, which functionally are also perforating terminal arteries.
Every single region or structure of the brain has it’s on supplying arteries, but in several cases a certain region may be supplied from more than one directions.
This potential is favorable in cases of cerebrovascular disorders. In regions, where because of their supply by terminal arteries (perforating vessels) overlapping blood supply is absent, watershed infarcts evolves more frequently (for further information see neurology).
