II./4.2.: Epidemiology

Tumours of the central nervous system account for 1.5-2 % of all tumours. The annual incidence rate for central nervous system tumours is estimated to be 15 per 100 000 inhabitants. Approximately half of all brain tumours are of glial origin, of which 50% is glioblastoma multiforme (GBM). (1) Low grade glioma (LGG) occurs mostly around the age of 35, anaplastic astrocytoma (AA) between 35-55 years, while glioblastoma multiforme above 60 years of age. In Hungary approximately around 2000 patients are being hospitalized and treated due to malignant tumours of the nervous system. Malignant nervous tumours account for 350 annual hospital deaths.
