II./3.2.: Ultrasound – US
Since ultrasound is easily available, widespread prevalent, non-invasive, quick and easy to apply, this technique is recommended as the first-line choice in case of abdominal-pelvic pain in a suspicion of diverticulitis. Diverticula appear as small, hyperechoic dots outside the bowel wall, accompanied by segmental bowel wall thickening (muscular hypertrophy of lamina as well) of more than 4 mm in chronic-recidivant inflammation. Abscess formation can be also revealed as a well circumscribed hypoechoic lesion adjacent to the colon, which contains an echo referring to air content and shows no peristaltic activity in contrast to bowel loops.
