Diverticulosis causes no symptoms in 75 to 80% of cases; commonly it is diagnosed by chance during other examinations.
In 20% of patients complaints, diverticulosis disease develops that can be divided further to the following subgroups:

- uncomplicated
-
- associated with recurring symptoms, as well as
-
- complicated
Real diverticulitis develops in 20% of patients during their lifetime, potentially leading to further complications (Hinchey staging system). When the diverticular wall opens, perforation, abscess, local phlegmon, peritonitis may develop. An abscess develops in 15 to 20% of patients with diverticulitis.
